Some details about the 2008 DIMACS/DyDAn/Math Department REU Program
- The dates of the eight-week program are June 2 — July 25, 2008.
(This program requires eight weeks of intense effort and on-site
participation. Students should not commit to other activities (e.g.,
courses) during the REU program).
- Housing accommodations will be in two-bedroom apartments with two
people per bedroom (unless you opt for a single room). Offices,
recreational facilities and mentors will all be within walking
distance. Internet connectivity is available in the apartments.
- The stipend is $2,400 for students who wish to have a single room
(contingent on availability), and $3,300 for students who wish to be
doubled up.
- Reimbursement will be made for travel costs up to $500
(if you use your own car to get here we can pay mileage at 31¢ / mile).
Extra funds may be alloted on a case by case basis.
- Each apartment will have a kitchen. Students are responsible for
cooking their own meals and for eating right. Linens and basic kitchen
supplies such as dishes, glasses, utensils, pots and pans are
provided. However, this is all very basic and no-frills so you might
want to bring some stuff to supplement what we have. We also suggest
you bring any small appliances that you might want such as a toaster,
coffeemaker, etc.
- Apartments have telephone service which must be activated by
each student by visiting the telephone office, selecting a PIN
number and securing payment of charges with a credit card.
- REU students will have access to all the recreational facilities on all
five campuses, including pools, racquetball courts, weight rooms,
fitness centers, volleyball courts and tennis courts.
- The mailing address for REU students is:
- DIMACS
- Rutgers University
- 4th Floor CoRE Building
- 96 Frelinghuysen Road
- Piscataway, NJ 08854-8018.
Some activities for your participation
- We will help you get to religious services if you so desire.
- We will have occasional meetings where students will take turns
giving brief talks summarizing the problems they are pursuing and the
results they have gotten so far.
- We will have several prominent researchers giving talks to our
group, open to the public, on subjects related to our research topics.
- New York City is about an hour away. We will pursue the idea of
group trips to the city, if there's any interest.
- DIMACS regularly presents seminars, workshops and summer
institutes which may be of interest to our REU students. Students are
encouraged to take advantage of these programs and should regularly
check our calendar of events to plan their schedules to include participation in these events.
- DIMACS also presents a series of seminars and workshops specifically for DIMACS/DyDAn and Math REU students.
Students should plan to attend accordingly.
A calendar of 2007 events for the REU can be found here.
What is expected from you? (beyond your research efforts)
- For payroll purposes, you are required to present your social
security card. No other form of proof of social security number can be
accepted. If you have lost your social security card please go to a
Social Security Office at least one month prior to the start of the
program to apply for a duplicate card so you have it by the time the
program starts.
- You will be expected to attend all seminars and presentations scheduled for the REU program.
- Within the first two weeks of the program you should set
up a web page on the DIMACS site with a description of your project
(assistance will be provided to anyone who needs it).
- You should update your web page with any progress you make on your project throughout the program.
- Within two weeks after the end of your program you should
update your webpage with the results of your project and continue to
update the page if you make continued progress after that.
